What does the SSI Deep Diving course in Gozo look like?

The SSI Deep Diving course in Gozo consists of a knowledge part and 4 open water dives.

Knowledge

The knowledge part is based on an accessible digital textbook that you can read on your computer or in an app on your cell phone. We can make it available to you even before you arrive to give you more time to process the knowledge.

Each chapter of the manual ends with review questions to help you know if you understand everything. In addition, you also have our instructors to discuss the most important issues with you and clarify any doubts. You will learn how to plan safe dives up to 40m, paying attention to no-decompression time and the amount of breathing gas. Finally, you will have to take an exam, which you can do in the app, when you are ready.

Open water dives

During 4 recreational dives we will teach you all the skills necessary for safe deep diving. We will work on your diving position under water and your gas consumption. Together, we will be monitoring the remaining no-decompression limits and end each dive with launching an SMB. The maximum depth will change gradually with each dive so as to reach 40m on the last day.

During your two course dives, we will give you a complimentary Nitrox 28 to see how much your no-decompression limit will increase. If you don’t already have an enriched air diving certificate, we can conduct such a course in parallel.

Frequently Asked Questions about SSI Deep Diving Course

What is a deep diving course?

A deep diving course is specialised scuba training that teaches divers the skills and safety procedures required for depths up to 40 mteres (130 feet).

Deep diving courses provide essential knowledge and skills to safely explore depths up to 40 mteres (130 feet), enhancing a diver’s capabilities and experience.

Depths beyond 18 meters (60 feet) are generally considered deep in recreational diving, requiring specific training. However, you must remember that the limit of recreational diving and for deep diving course is 40m (130 feet).

Deep diving poses additional risks, such as nitrogen narcosis and reduced air supply, making specialised training crucial for safety.

Deep diving requires standard scuba gear. Since you will be diving close to non-decompression limits, you must have a dive computer.

With SSI, all you need is your Open Water Diver certification from any recognised agency. Most agencies require divers to also have an advanced open water certification before enrolling in a deep diving course.

Age requirements vary depending on scuba diving agency. However, divers are generally required to be at least 15 to 18 years old to enroll in a deep diving course. With SSI the minimum ages is 15 eyars.

Deep diving courses typically involve classroom sessions and three to four open water dives. They usually take two, rarely three days.

Skills include planning deep dives, managing air supply, managing nitrogen narcossis, dealing with increased pressure and emergency procedures specific to deep-water environments.

While possible, diving beyond 18 metres (60 feet) without proper training is highly discouraged due to increased risks. A deep diving course enhances safety and competence.
